Expo 2020 Dubai: delivering the live engine behind a global platform
The world’s biggest events are won or lost on delivery. Behind Expo 2020 Dubai’s flagship Programme for People and Planet sat a live events operation that had to run flawlessly, every day, for six months. Leading that delivery was my role.
The challenge
Expo 2020 Dubai was the first World Expo held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, welcoming 192 countries and 24.1 million visits across 182 days, and delivered after a one-year pandemic postponement.
Its flagship content platform, the Programme for People and Planet, set an ambitious global agenda with UN agencies and partners across climate, health, food, water, inclusion and the Sustainable Development Goals. An agenda is only as powerful as its execution. Those ideas had to become hundreds of live events, staged across the site, to time and to standard, day after day, in front of a global audience and the world’s media.
The approach
As Director of Events + Entertainment, I led and delivered the 229 events and activations that brought the Programme for People and Planet to life across the full 182-day event. The content agenda was shaped with Expo’s programme team and UN partners. My mandate was to turn it into flawless live production: programming and scheduling across 23 venues, managing more than 3,000 bookings, and delivering up to 60 events on a single day without compromising quality, safety or experience.
It was high-volume, multi-venue live delivery at one of the most demanding scales in event history, where every session had an international audience and no margin for error.
The results
A flagship global programme delivered in full, on the ground, for the duration of Expo. The 229 events and activations gave the Programme for People and Planet its live presence, the moments where its agenda met real audiences, and they ran across 23 venues over 182 days at a peak of up to 60 events a day.
Those events powered a programme that ultimately engaged 2,000 voices from 142 countries, worked with 20 UN agencies and offices, and reached 29 million people online, all staged within an Expo that welcomed 24.1 million visits and 192 nations.
The work demonstrated something every senior leader values: the most ambitious strategy in the world still depends on disciplined, accountable delivery, and delivering at this scale, flawlessly and repeatedly, is its own form of leadership.
The legacy, and the market
Expo 2020 did not end when the gates closed, it became infrastructure. The site lives on as Expo City Dubai, which retained around 80 per cent of the original build, was named host of COP28 in 2023, and now anchors a business district of more than 2,100 companies at roughly 85 per cent occupancy. An EY study projects Expo 2020 will add AED 154.9 billion to the UAE economy between 2013 and 2042, with the legacy phase accounting for more than 60 per cent of that contribution. The live programme was the moment the platform first proved it could convene the world.
The discipline behind it has only grown in value. The global events industry is now worth around USD 1.46 trillion in 2026 and is growing at close to 10 per cent a year, and experiential marketing has overtaken digital advertising as the single largest share of marketing-services spend. Delivering live experiences at scale, flawlessly and repeatedly, is the core of event and experiential marketing.
Delivery metrics reflect the events and activations programme I led. Wider Expo figures are as publicly reported by Expo 2020 Dubai. Legacy and economic figures are from Expo City Dubai and an EY study. Events-industry figures reflect 2026 market research.
I now apply the same delivery discipline to client events through my event management service.
