Leadership
Do you need a fractional CMO? A two-minute readiness check
Most founders sense their marketing has outgrown its leadership before they can name it. Tick the statements that are true of your business today and this check turns the hunch into a score.
Marketing outgrows its leadership before anyone says so
There is a stage almost every growing company reaches where marketing quietly outgrows the person leading it. Spend rises, the team or the agencies get busier, and nobody at a senior level can say whether any of it is driving growth. The founder feels it well before they can name it.
This is a fast way to name it. Tick each statement below that is true of your business today. The more that are true, the wider the gap between what your marketing costs and what it is owned to deliver, and the stronger the case for senior leadership without a full-time hire.

Book a discovery callWhat your score means
The bands are deliberately simple, because the decision is too. The question is whether anyone senior owns whether your marketing drives growth.
- 0 to 3, likely covered for now. Someone senior is owning the result. Keep an eye on these signals as you scale, because the gap tends to open quietly rather than all at once.
- 4 to 6, a widening gap. Marketing is starting to outrun its leadership. This is the stage to act before spend drifts, either with a fractional CMO or a focused diagnostic to reset priorities.
- 7 to 10, a clear ownership gap. You have CMO-level problems without a CMO-level owner, and it is almost certainly costing you more than the role would. This is the point at which a fractional CMO pays for itself.
What a fractional CMO fixes
A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who takes on the chief marketing officer role part-time and stays accountable for the commercial result: setting the strategy, deciding where the budget goes, connecting marketing to sales and finance, and reporting in the language the board uses to allocate capital. It is the senior ownership these statements keep pointing at, without the cost of a full-time hire. For the full picture, start with what a fractional CMO is and when to hire one, and how the role differs from a marketing agency.
“The question is never whether your marketing is busy. It is whether anyone owns whether it grows the business.”
Frequently asked questions
Select a question to open the answer.
What score means I should hire a fractional CMO?
There is no hard line. A score of seven or more usually signals a clear ownership gap: CMO-level problems with no CMO-level owner. At four to six the gap is opening and worth addressing early. At zero to three you likely have the senior ownership you need for now.
Is a fractional CMO different from hiring an agency?
Yes. An agency executes channels to a brief you set. A fractional CMO owns the strategy and the commercial result, and directs the agencies. Several of the statements above, such as having agencies with no connecting strategy, point at that ownership gap rather than an execution one.
We are a small company. Is it too early?
Where you have real marketing spend and real ambition with no senior owner of the return, it is rarely too early. The fractional model exists precisely so growth-stage companies can reach CMO-level leadership before they can justify a full-time hire.
